the yarn

The yarn

It all begins with the yarn. Yarn is everywhere. It is natural, precious, fragile, yet strong. You can use different types of yarn to connect, to bond, to tie, and untie.

With cord, you can keep someone close to you or let him go. With rope, you can find your way out of a labyrinth, make knots and cut them.  With silk thread, you can express your individuality.

The knotting of the yarn creates something out of nothing. And with its rhythmic repetition, it is a primordial ritual and a meditation.

The Philosophy

Be unique. Be natural. Be daring and courageous. Be mysterious. Be sensual.  Cut cords. Untie knots. Live in the moment. Resist what is not yours. Leave a legacy.  Express yourself. Transcend time.

The Art

Karima pieces draw inspiration from ancient Greece and Greek folk tradition. They bring to mind memories of the draping of peplos and chiton (ancient Greek garments), and the embroidered aprons and vests of the Greek folk costumes.

Karima pieces are made using a variety of yarn. Silk threads from Soufli, cotton rope, cord, and straw, are mixed on occasion with leather and beads which are all bought from small Greek producers.

Karima pieces are created on the doll without a fixed pattern, following the anatomy and fluidity of the female body. Each piece requires hours of meticulous hand work, more than a hundred meters of yarn, innumerable knots, astounding focus, and dedication. Each piece is a one of a kind; a sculpture to be worn.

Each piece is polymorphic. It can be worn as a stand-alone garment, as a jewel, or on top of other clothes.

Each piece is characterized by movement and fluidity.
